Gottman Couples Method

This research-based approach involves doing concrete tasks and exercises within the couples format, in order to build trust and commitment in the relationship. Couples learn about one another’s inner thoughts, stresses, joys, and hopes and they build a stronger sense of appreciation and respect toward one another. Couples also learn to turn toward one another by stating their needs and staying present and responsive to their partners. Using this approach, couples take on a positive approach to problem-solving, learn how to distinguish between solvable and gridlock problems, and learn how to repair their problems. The therapy also allows each person to talk honestly about his/her future hopes and aspirations and helps the couples create the “we lens.” The Gottman approach also helps couples identify and work through the 4 Horsemen (Criticism, Defensiveness, Contempt, and Stonewalling).
