Grief Recovery Method
The Grief Recovery Method® is a treatment method that helps people recover from their loss in a supportive and non-judgmental environment. This method allows people to express their thoughts and feelings and to then engage in a series of steps/actions that are designed to help them complete the pain associated with the loss. Time often does not heal all wounds, actions do.
HopeWell Psychological offers individual and group grief support programs to suit your unique needs. These Grief Recovery® services are conducted in association with The Grief Recovery Institute.® The Grief Recovery Individual Program is 7 sessions long, the Grief Recovery Group Program is 8 sessions long, and the Parents of Grieving Children Program is 6 sessions long.
People can experience any number of losses, some of which are discussed below:
- Loss of health/body function – medical conditions, illnesses, pain, disability, debilitating or terminal diseases, mental capacities, aging, loss of body part from surgery or accident
- Loss of control/safety- natural or human-caused disasters, accidents, social conditions, hospitalization, rape, robbery, betrayal, unanticipated events, crises, traumatic events, disasters
- Loss of freedom – political, employment, incarceration, stigmatized disease
- Loss of home – homelessness, natural or man-made disasters, aging
- Loss of identity or life roles – marriage, career, empty nest syndrome, retirement, relationship
- Loss of independence – change in living situation, entering nursing home, marriage, having a child
- Loss of job and/or income – downsizing, layoffs, retirement, career change
- Loss of life – death, suicide, illness, accident, homicide, murder, war, loss of pets, missing person
- Loss of hopes & dreams – divorce, miscarriage, adoption, infertility, relationship, job, career
- Loss of relationship – death, divorce, separation, illness, adoption, miscarriage, abortion, stillbirth
- Loss of religious beliefs – questioning beliefs, disillusioned with church
- Loss of important object(s) – favourite objects, family heirlooms destroyed in fire/flood, theft
Grief is the normal and natural emotional response to loss, but most of the information we have learned about dealing with loss is intellectual. Although our Grief Support Groups involve some educational elements, effective Grief Recovery must deal with your broken heart, which requires emotional support instead of intellectual explanations. More often than not, we hear the following unhelpful messages about how to grieve, when we lose someone or something very important to us:
- Time heals all wounds – “You’ll be fine in a month.”
- Replace the loss – “Oh, you can always get another dog.”
- Grieve alone – “He just needs some time alone.”
- Be strong – “Hang in there and be strong.”
- Don’t feel bad – “It was just a hamster, losing a dog would be way worse.”
- Keep busy – “Life goes back to normal if you keep yourself busy.”
