Dissociation is an unconscious defense mechanism where a person is able to disconnect him/herself from extremely painful events in order to protect him/herself.
Dissociation runs on a continuum – low level of dissociation is when a person “goes on autopilot” while driving a very familiar route whereas a high level of dissociation leads a person to feel disconnected from their reality, their environment, or even their own sense of self.
Understanding the Experience
For many, dissociation acts as a survival tool during or after traumatic experiences. It can manifest as:
- Feeling detached from your body or emotions (depersonalization).
- Feeling as though the world around you is unreal or dreamlike (derealization).
- Losing track of time or experiencing memory gaps regarding specific events.
- Experiencing a sense of "spacing out" during stressful encounters.
